Supreme Court Grants Interim Protection to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia Amid Controversy

The Supreme Court has granted interim protection from arrest to YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, following multiple First Information Reports filed against him over controversial remarks made during an episode of the YouTube show 'India's Got Latent'. The court has also directed that no further FIRs be registered concerning the episode in question.

During the hearing, Justice Surya Kant expressed strong disapproval of Allahbadia's comments, stating, "There is something very dirty in his mind which has been vomited." The court emphasized that societal values must be respected and that popularity does not grant individuals the liberty to disregard them.

Allahbadia's legal counsel, Abhinav Chandrachud, informed the court that his client has been receiving death threats, including a ₹5 lakh bounty for cutting his tongue. Chandrachud argued that all FIRs should be consolidated to prevent multiple proceedings across different jurisdictions.

The controversy began on February 10, 2025, when Allahbadia, appearing as a guest judge on 'India's Got Latent', posed a provocative question to a contestant. The remark led to widespread backlash on social media and resulted in FIRs being filed in Maharashtra and Assam, accusing Allahbadia of promoting obscenity. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the registration of a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

In response to the uproar, Allahbadia issued a public apology and removed the controversial segments from the show. Comedian Samay Raina, the show's host, also deleted all episodes of 'India's Got Latent' from his YouTube channel, expressing his intention to cooperate with authorities.

Despite the interim protection, the Supreme Court has mandated that Allahbadia deposit his passport with the police and refrain from leaving the country without prior permission. The court has also instructed him to cooperate with ongoing investigations related to the FIRs.

The National Commission for Women has summoned Allahbadia and others involved to appear before the panel. Allahbadia, citing safety concerns due to death threats, requested a rescheduled hearing, which the NCW has set for March 6. Other individuals, including Jaspreet Singh and Samay Raina, have also been given new dates to appear before the commission.
