Delhi Police has initiated a major crackdown targeting illegal immigrants within the city, following directives from Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena. The action, announced in mid-November 2024, is part of a month-long special drive aimed at addressing the rise in unauthorized immigrants, particularly in areas where encroachment on public spaces such as parks and footpaths has been reported.
The surge in illegal immigration has been particularly noticeable in specific neighborhoods where individuals have been using fraudulent documents to obtain identification such as Aadhaar cards and voter IDs, raising concerns over national security. These fake documents, which grant individuals the rights to vote and access government services, have been increasingly scrutinized due to their misuse by unauthorized migrants. Saxena's order also includes a call for a swift response from the Delhi Chief Secretary, as well as officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), to address the encroachment issues.
This action follows several reports, including social media alerts, highlighting the increasing number of illegal immigrants who are attempting to claim citizenship rights through fraudulent means. Saxena's office has directed the authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the identification and removal of these immigrants from the city. He also highlighted concerns regarding encroachments that have taken place on public properties, with some locations being overrun by unregistered inhabitants.
Authorities are now conducting thorough investigations into these claims and tightening scrutiny of identification procedures. As part of the verification process, the Delhi Police will focus on areas with significant migrant populations and work in coordination with local officials to prevent the illegal settlement of individuals who might jeopardize the security and well-being of the city's residents.
