Modi condemns Washington attack on Trump event

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the security scare at a Washington hotel after US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were moved to safety when gunfire disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Modi said on Sunday that he was relieved to learn that the US president, the first lady and the vice president were safe and unharmed after the incident at the Washington DC hotel. He extended best wishes for their continued safety and said violence had no place in a democracy and must be condemned unequivocally.

The incident unfolded on Saturday night, Washington time, at the Washington Hilton, where Trump was attending the annual dinner with senior officials, journalists, lawmakers and invited guests. Security personnel moved the president and other top figures away from the main event area after shots were heard near the venue, triggering panic among attendees and an immediate law-enforcement response.

A suspect was taken into custody after attempting to breach the security perimeter near the dinner venue. Authorities said the man was armed and that the episode was being investigated as a serious security breach. A Secret Service officer was reported to have been struck, with protective gear preventing more serious injury. No senior official at the event was hurt.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, one of Washington’s most visible political-media gatherings, draws hundreds of officials, diplomats, journalists and public figures each year. The presence of the president, vice president and Cabinet-level officials makes the event one of the most tightly secured social engagements in the US political calendar.

The scare comes against a backdrop of heightened concern over political violence in the United States. Trump survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 election campaign, including a shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania and a separate security episode at his Florida golf club. Those incidents led to intensified scrutiny of protective arrangements around presidential candidates and senior elected officials.

Modi’s message reflected New Delhi’s close attention to developments involving Trump, with whom he has maintained a highly visible political rapport across both leaders’ terms in office. The two leaders have repeatedly projected the relationship as a strategic partnership built around defence cooperation, trade, technology, energy and diaspora ties.

The latest exchange also comes at a time when New Delhi and Washington are navigating a complex set of policy issues, including tariffs, energy security, immigration rules and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Security incidents involving top US officials are closely watched by partner governments because of their potential to affect diplomatic schedules, investor confidence and broader geopolitical messaging.

US authorities were examining how the suspect came close enough to trigger a major security response at an event guarded by multiple agencies. The Secret Service, local police and federal investigators were expected to review screening procedures, access control, weapons detection and coordination between hotel security and federal protective teams.

Guests inside the venue described confusion after loud noises were heard, with people taking cover as agents and police moved through the ballroom. The event was disrupted as security teams focused on protecting the president, vice president, first lady and senior officials.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has often served as a symbolic venue for interaction between the presidency and the press corps. Trump’s attendance carried political significance, given his long-running tensions with major media organisations and his use of the event to frame his relationship with Washington’s political and journalistic establishment.

Modi’s response placed emphasis on democratic norms rather than partisan politics. By condemning violence and wishing safety to the US leadership, the Prime Minister aligned New Delhi’s public position with a broader international reaction against attacks or threats directed at elected leaders.

The incident is likely to deepen debate in Washington over the security of high-profile political events held outside official government premises. Hotels, convention centres and campaign venues pose operational challenges because of multiple entrances, large guest lists, private staff access and the presence of media equipment, catering teams and outside contractors.
