Jamia Millia Islamia has instituted a new requirement obliging parents or local guardians of newly admitted students to assume responsibility for their wards' conduct and character. This stipulation, embedded in the university's Standard Operating Procedure approved in April 2024, is distinctive among central universities in Delhi, where parental declarations typically pertain solely to anti-ragging commitments.
The undertaking necessitates parents or guardians to affirm their accountability for the student's behaviour and to be available to the university when required. This move aligns with the university's intensified emphasis on discipline and order, particularly following student protests in February 2025. During these demonstrations, students alleged that the university publicised their personal details and involved their parents to dissuade participation.
A faculty member, speaking anonymously, described the initiative as a preventive measure aimed at fostering accountability and maintaining order from the outset of a student's academic journey. Contrastingly, institutions like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University confirmed they do not impose such extensive undertakings on student guardians.
