BRUSSELS – The European Union has formally approved Apple’s proposed changes to its “tap to pay” system, bringing an end to a high-profile antitrust investigation. The tech giant will now allow rival mobile wallets and payment services to access the contactless payment feature on iPhones within the European Economic Area.
The decision follows a lengthy probe launched in 2022, where the EU accused Apple of abusing its dominant position by restricting access to its mobile payment technology. Apple countered by offering to open up its system to competitors earlier this year.
The EU’s competition enforcer, Margrethe Vestager, expressed satisfaction with Apple’s final commitments, stating that they effectively address competition concerns. The agreement will remain in force for a decade, with a designated trustee overseeing its implementation.
Apple’s concession is seen as a significant victory for proponents of increased competition in the mobile payments market. While Apple Pay and Apple Wallet will continue to be available, the move opens the door for a wider range of payment options for iPhone users across Europe.
