The AIADMK had previously severed ties with the BJP in 2023, citing disagreements over remarks made by BJP state president K. Annamalai about Dravidian leaders. However, Palaniswami's recent comments suggest a reconsideration of this position, emphasizing the primary goal of defeating the ruling DMK.
Annamalai, on his part, has adopted a more conciliatory tone, refraining from criticizing the AIADMK and focusing his attacks on the DMK. This change aligns with the BJP's national leadership's strategy to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu by potentially reviving the alliance with the AIADMK.
Despite these developments, the AIADMK has maintained that no formal alliance has been established. Palaniswami has indicated that the party will make a decision closer to the elections, keeping its options open.
The BJP, meanwhile, is reportedly seeking a larger share of seats in the alliance, aiming for 15 seats in the upcoming elections, up from the five it previously contested. This demand reflects the party's ambition to expand its influence in the state.
