Rekha Gupta to Be Sworn In as Delhi's Chief Minister Today

Rekha Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from Shalimar Bagh, is set to take the oath as Delhi's Chief Minister today at Ramlila Maidan. This marks the Bharatiya Janata Party's return to power in the national capital after a 27-year hiatus. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to commence at noon, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders in attendance.

Gupta's ascent to the chief ministerial position follows the BJP's decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where the party secured 48 out of 70 seats, effectively ending the decade-long tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party , which managed to win 22 seats. This victory is particularly significant for the BJP, as it regains control of Delhi's governance after nearly three decades.

At 50, Gupta brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has previously served as a student leader within the party and has been actively involved in various social initiatives. Her election as the leader of the BJP legislative party was confirmed during a meeting of newly elected MLAs on Wednesday evening. Following her election, Gupta met with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to formally stake her claim to form the government.

In her first public address after being named chief minister-designate, Gupta expressed gratitude to the party leadership and outlined her immediate priorities. "My first priority is to address the pressing issues of pollution and infrastructure in Delhi. I am committed to ensuring a cleaner environment and better facilities for all residents," she stated.

The new cabinet, set to be sworn in alongside Gupta, comprises six ministers: Parvesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Ravinder Indraj Singh. This selection reflects the BJP's strategy to balance representation across various communities, including Jaat, Sikh, Punjabi, Dalit, and Purvanchali leaders.

Security measures have been intensified across the city in anticipation of the ceremony. Over 25,000 security personnel and more than 15 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure the event proceeds without incident. Delhi Police have also issued traffic advisories, recommending that commuters avoid the Ajmeri Gate route to New Delhi Railway Station and instead use the Paharganj side.

Gupta's decision to forgo the official chief ministerial residence, commonly referred to as the 'Sheesh Mahal,' has garnered public attention. She announced her intention to continue residing at her current home, signaling a commitment to simplicity and accessibility. "I believe in leading by example. My home will remain open to the people of Delhi," she affirmed.

The BJP's return to power in Delhi is seen as a significant political development, especially following its performance in the previous national elections. Prime Minister Modi described the victory as "resounding and historic," emphasizing the party's dedication to the development of the capital. "This mandate reflects the trust the people of Delhi have in our vision for a prosperous and inclusive city," Modi remarked.

The outgoing AAP government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, has pledged to serve as a constructive opposition. Kejriwal, who conceded defeat, extended his congratulations to Gupta and the BJP. "We respect the mandate of the people. Our commitment to Delhi remains unwavering, and we will continue to work for the betterment of the city," he stated.

As Gupta prepares to assume office, her administration is expected to prioritize key issues such as pollution control, infrastructure development, and public welfare schemes. The implementation of the Mahila Samriddhi Yojna, which proposes a monthly payment of ₹2,500 to eligible women, and the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme are anticipated to be among the first initiatives undertaken by the new government.
