A dense fog blanketed North India on Friday, severely disrupting air and rail services. At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, visibility dropped to zero during the early morning hours, leading to significant delays and cancellations. Over 100 flights were delayed, and several were canceled, according to flight tracking platforms.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for updated flight information and recommended allowing extra travel time to the airport due to reduced visibility and slower traffic. IndiGo Airlines also issued advisories, urging travelers to stay updated on flight statuses before heading to the airport.
Train services were equally affected, with numerous delays and cancellations reported across the region. The dense fog led to reduced visibility on railway tracks, causing disruptions in schedules and inconveniencing passengers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR, warning that the dense fog could impact airports, highways, and railway routes, leading to challenging travel conditions and longer journey times. The IMD also forecasted that these foggy conditions are likely to persist over the next few days, potentially causing further disruptions.
In addition to travel disruptions, the air quality in Delhi deteriorated sharply, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) plunging into the 'severe' category, recording a level of 411 at 8 am. Such poor air quality poses significant health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.
