Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intensified his criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), branding it a "disaster" for Delhi as the city approaches its assembly elections. Speaking at a recent event in the capital, Modi accused AAP of failing to deliver on promises and leading the city into a decade-long crisis.
Modi's remarks come as the Election Commission is expected to announce the poll schedule for Delhi, with elections anticipated in February. The Prime Minister's statements are seen as a strategic move to galvanize support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the incumbent AAP government.
In his address, Modi criticized AAP's governance, alleging corruption in sectors such as education, healthcare, pollution control, and the liquor trade. He also took a personal dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, referring to his official residence as a "Sheesh Mahal" and accusing him of extravagant spending while neglecting the needs of Delhi's residents.
The Prime Minister highlighted the central government's efforts to improve living conditions in Delhi, mentioning the regularization of unauthorized colonies and the provision of housing for the underprivileged. He claimed that despite these initiatives, the local government has failed to provide basic amenities like water and sewer facilities, exacerbating the hardships faced by millions of residents.
In response, Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leaders have dismissed Modi's allegations, labeling them as politically motivated attacks ahead of the elections. Kejriwal countered by accusing the BJP of being the "real disaster" for Delhi, citing issues such as rising crime rates and lack of security for women and traders.
Kejriwal also criticized the BJP-led central government for its handling of law and order in the capital, urging the Prime Minister to direct more attention to the safety and security of Delhi's citizens. He accused the central government of neglecting its duties while focusing on political maneuvers.
The escalating war of words between the BJP and AAP underscores the high stakes of the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. AAP, which secured an overwhelming majority in the last election with 62 out of 70 seats, is seeking a third consecutive term. The BJP, having faced setbacks in previous state elections, is aiming to regain control in the capital.
Political analysts suggest that the BJP's strategy involves highlighting alleged governance failures and corruption within AAP, while showcasing the central government's development projects in Delhi. The inauguration of infrastructure and educational projects by Modi is seen as part of this approach to sway voters.
On the other hand, AAP is focusing on its track record in sectors like education, healthcare, and public services, areas where it claims to have made significant improvements. The party is also emphasizing its commitment to anti-corruption and pro-poor policies, aiming to resonate with the urban electorate.
The political climate in Delhi is further complicated by recent developments at the national level. In the 2024 general elections, the BJP lost its outright majority in the lower house of Parliament, necessitating alliances with regional parties to form the government. This shift has emboldened opposition parties, including AAP, to challenge the BJP's dominance more aggressively.
AAP has faced its own challenges, with Kejriwal being granted bail in a graft case earlier this year. The case involves allegations of corruption linked to Delhi’s liquor policy, which Kejriwal has denied, describing the charges as politically motivated.
