The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, has officially dissolved the State Waqf Board, marking a significant administrative move aimed at improving governance and addressing legal hurdles. The decision was formalized through a government order issued on November 30, which revoked a previous order that had established the 11-member board under the former YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.
The board's dissolution stems from its prolonged non-functionality since March 2023, attributed to legal disputes and administrative challenges. The High Court had earlier stayed the election of the board’s chairperson, raising questions about the legality of the board's composition. To prevent further administrative stagnation, the government withdrew the earlier order, with officials citing good governance and the safeguarding of Waqf properties as primary objectives.
Minorities Welfare Minister N. Md. Farooq emphasized that the coalition government is committed to the welfare of minority communities and effective management of Waqf properties. He clarified that the restructuring is not linked to the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill being debated nationally but is a routine step necessitated by legal challenges. He further announced plans to reconstitute the board, potentially under the leadership of Shaik Abdul Aziz, a senior leader within the Telugu Desam Party and the current president of its Nellore parliamentary constituency.
