Kashmiri Students at Bengaluru College Raise Prayer Concerns

Kashmiri Muslim students at Sri Soubagaya College of Nursing in Bengaluru have alleged that the institution’s administration denied them the opportunity to perform Friday prayers, a key obligation in their faith. The students claim repeated requests to attend the prayers outside the campus were denied, sparking discontent and prompting appeals to religious organizations and local authorities for intervention.

The matter came to light when students voiced their frustration, emphasizing the importance of Jumu'ah prayers in Islam and highlighting the college's refusal to accommodate their requests despite assurances during their admission process. The administration, however, maintains that institutional policies and logistical challenges prevent the provision of facilities for religious practices during academic hours.

This incident has reignited debates on balancing religious freedoms with institutional policies in educational institutions. Legal experts point out that while freedom of religion is protected under the Indian Constitution, institutions have the discretion to enforce rules to maintain operational efficiency, provided these do not constitute discrimination or violate constitutional rights.

The students have sought assistance from prominent Kashmiri student associations and advocacy groups, urging mediation to resolve the matter. Representatives of these groups have underscored the importance of addressing such issues sensitively, especially given the larger context of ensuring inclusivity for students from diverse backgrounds.

This case mirrors similar incidents in educational institutions nationwide, where religious accommodations have become points of contention. Advocates for student rights argue that fostering an inclusive environment requires a more nuanced approach, where religious and cultural practices are integrated into campus policies without disrupting academic obligations. On the other hand, institutional authorities often cite administrative constraints as a barrier to such accommodations.
