The opening day of Parliament's Winter Session was marked by heated exchanges as the INDIA bloc launched a strong offensive against the government, accusing it of ignoring serious allegations of bribery involving the Adani Group. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions were adjourned following uproarious protests from opposition leaders demanding immediate discussions on the matter.
The controversy stems from allegations that Gautam Adani, along with seven others, was involved in a $265 million bribery scheme to secure power-supply contracts. The charges, filed by U.S. prosecutors, have reignited domestic political battles, with the Adani Group firmly denying the accusations and terming them baseless. This comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the conglomerate’s dealings and broader criticism of regulatory oversight in India.
The INDIA bloc, comprising major opposition parties, including Congress and regional groups, intensified its attack on the government, alleging that the silence on the issue reflects complicity. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated calls for an independent investigation and parliamentary debate, asserting that the allegations undermine India’s democratic integrity and governance.
Government ministers countered the opposition’s demands, accusing them of politicizing the issue and disrupting legislative proceedings. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized the government’s readiness to discuss all topics constructively while urging opposition leaders to maintain decorum. His call for cooperation failed to pacify opposition leaders, who insisted on prioritizing debates on the alleged scandal and other pressing matters.
