Allegations of a bribery scheme involving the Adani Group and the previous YSRCP-led Andhra Pradesh government have prompted a promise of action from the state’s Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu. This follows revelations by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding an alleged $250 million bribe paid to Indian officials by the Adani Group to secure favorable terms in solar power contracts. The conglomerate has categorically denied these charges.
Naidu addressed the state assembly, confirming that his government is reviewing the chargesheets filed in the U.S., emphasizing the need to uphold Andhra Pradesh's reputation. He criticized the alleged involvement of the YSRCP regime, noting the potential damage to the state’s image and branding. He further assured lawmakers that an in-depth examination of the charges would guide subsequent actions, which would be transparently communicated.
The controversy centers around a period between 2019 and 2024 when the YSRCP government allegedly engaged in corrupt dealings with the Adani Group. While the current administration claims to be scrutinizing evidence, the YSRCP has denied any direct agreements with Adani, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
Calls for accountability have grown louder within Andhra Pradesh, with some legislators demanding that former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy face consequences if found complicit. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including Congress, have seized the opportunity to question broader government ties to the Adani Group, intensifying political scrutiny on the issue.
