Udhayanidhi Stalin Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Amid Cabinet Reshuffle

Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, has officially been appointed as the state's Deputy Chief Minister. His promotion comes during a significant cabinet reshuffle that has seen several key changes in the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leadership. At the swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Chennai, Udhayanidhi took his oath, reflecting the growing influence of the Stalin family within the DMK, particularly as the party looks ahead to the 2026 Assembly elections.

Udhayanidhi, who had been serving as the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, has risen quickly within Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His appointment is seen as an important move to solidify the DMK's leadership for the future, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. While accepting his new role, Udhayanidhi expressed his sense of responsibility, stating that he hopes to justify the decision made by the party.

This reshuffle also marks the return of V. Senthil Balaji, the state’s former electricity minister, to the cabinet. Senthil Balaji had been facing legal challenges, including charges of money laundering, for which he was granted bail only days prior to his reappointment. Despite his legal troubles, the DMK has opted to reinstate him as part of its ongoing governance strategy.

Three other key figures have also been inducted into the Tamil Nadu cabinet: Dr. Govi Chezhiaan, R. Rajendran, and S.M. Nasar. They each took their oaths alongside Udhayanidhi at the same ceremony, reflecting the broader changes being implemented by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

This cabinet reshuffle is not just about elevating younger leaders but is also aimed at balancing political experience with fresh faces. Senthil Balaji's reappointment, despite his legal complications, has sparked varied reactions. Supporters argue that Balaji’s experience and political acumen make him indispensable, especially as Tamil Nadu navigates complex governance challenges. Meanwhile, critics have raised concerns over his reentry into the cabinet following a lengthy legal battle.
