Smuggled Chinese garlic enters Gujarat markets despite 2014 ban

Despite a ban on Chinese garlic imports since 2014, traders in Gujarat’s Gondal Agriculture Produce Market were recently alarmed by the appearance of nearly 750kg of the banned product. The contraband was immediately seized, sparking protests among local traders concerned over the influx of cheaper, smuggled garlic that threatens domestic sales. Officials at the market notified state and central authorities after identifying the stock. The seizure has reignited concerns about smuggling operations exploiting price differences between domestic and foreign garlic.

According to market insiders, domestic garlic prices range between ₹275 and ₹288 per kilogram, while the cheaper, smuggled Chinese garlic undercuts these rates, making it profitable for smugglers. Traders have expressed concerns that such smuggling operations could continue to undermine the local economy, especially during times when garlic prices peak in urban retail markets.

This incident unfolded when a local trader noticed the unusual size and color of the garlic brought to the market. Following his tip-off, the market's management committee seized 30 bags, equivalent to 750kg, of Chinese garlic. Authorities are now investigating the channels through which the illegal stock entered the country, as this appears to be a growing issue affecting several markets in Gujarat.
