Banerjee Urges Dialogue as Junior Doctors in Kolkata Continue Protests

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again appealed for resolution as the protests by junior doctors over the tragic death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital intensify. Despite her repeated calls for negotiations, the doctors’ demands for a live-streamed dialogue remain unmet, stalling the anticipated discussions.

The unrest began following the alleged rape and murder of a second-year medical student on August 9. The incident, which occurred within the college premises, has sparked outrage among medical professionals and the wider community. Protesting doctors have expressed their frustration over the perceived lack of action by authorities, calling for a thorough investigation and immediate justice for the victim. The demonstrations have also raised concerns about safety protocols in educational institutions and hospitals.

Chief Minister Banerjee has sought to engage with the doctors, reassuring them that she prioritizes justice for the victim and the welfare of the public. She reiterated that no punitive measures would be taken against the striking medical staff and urged them to resume their duties in line with a Supreme Court ruling. The prolonged demonstrations, however, continue to disrupt healthcare services across Kolkata, further complicating the situation.

Banerjee’s appeals come amidst growing public frustration over the suspension of medical services in major hospitals, prompting calls for swift resolution. Despite assurances from the state leadership, the doctors have held firm on their demand for greater transparency in the negotiation process, including the insistence that any meeting with the chief minister be broadcast live to the public.
