Older vehicles may need E20 component changes

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has told the Rajya Sabha that most vehicles can operate on E20 petrol without major difficulties, although some older BS-III models may require replacement of rubber components and gaskets.

Replying to a parliamentary question on Wednesday, Gadkari said the potential requirement applied mainly to BS-III vehicles introduced from April 1, 2005, and manufactured before 2016. No changes to car or two-wheeler engines were considered necessary for using the fuel, he added.

E20 petrol contains 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol. Its nationwide introduction has prompted questions from vehicle owners about engine durability, fuel efficiency, warranties and the compatibility of models originally designed for lower ethanol blends.

Gadkari said studies involving Indian Oil Corporation, the Indian Institute of Petroleum, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and the Automotive Research Association of India found no major effect on overall vehicle performance.

Tests showed that BS-VI vehicles continued to meet the applicable emission standards while running on E20. The studies also reported no significant problems involving drivability, starting performance or the compatibility of metal components.

The qualification regarding older BS-III vehicles is important because ethanol has different chemical properties from petrol. A higher concentration can affect some rubber-based components in fuel systems that were not designed for prolonged exposure to a 20 per cent blend.

Parts that may require attention include hoses, seals, gaskets and O-rings. Deterioration in such components could lead to leaks, reduced reliability or maintenance expenses, although the government has maintained that the issue can generally be addressed without altering the engine.

The clarification comes as E20 becomes the standard petrol blend across the country. From April 2026, all BS-VI vehicles are required to meet E20 emission standards, while petrol sold at retail outlets is mandated to contain 20 per cent ethanol and meet a minimum research octane number of 95.

Vehicle manufacturers began introducing E20-compatible models ahead of the full transition. Many companies have also marked compatibility information on vehicles or included guidance in owner manuals, allowing motorists to determine whether a model was engineered for the higher blend.

Owners of vehicles built before 2016 may still need model-specific advice. Compatibility can vary depending on the manufacturer, year of production, engine configuration and materials used in the fuel-delivery system. Workshops may have to inspect vulnerable parts rather than assume that every BS-III vehicle requires replacement.

The government has sought to counter claims that E20 causes widespread engine damage. Testing conducted over extended operating periods found no abnormal wear or material reduction in the life of major engine components in compatible vehicles. Automobile manufacturers have also continued to honour warranties for vehicles approved to run on E20.

Fuel economy remains a separate concern. Ethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol, meaning mileage can decline when the proportion of ethanol rises. The extent of the reduction depends on engine design, calibration, driving conditions and whether the vehicle was optimised for E20.

Officials argue that improved engine tuning and ethanol’s higher octane rating can offset part of the efficiency loss in newer vehicles. The fuel can support higher compression ratios and more efficient combustion when an engine is specifically designed to use it.

The ethanol programme is intended to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, limit carbon emissions and create additional demand for agricultural feedstocks. Ethanol is produced from materials including sugarcane derivatives, damaged foodgrains, maize and other biomass sources.

The policy has expanded rapidly from the earlier use of E5 and E10 petrol. That pace has placed greater emphasis on consumer information, fuel-quality monitoring and the availability of suitable replacement components for the ageing vehicle fleet.
