Bihar’s government has discovered that learning outcomes improve dramatically once school walls are painted the correct political colour.
The BJP-led NDA administration has ordered 551 upgraded model schools, now named Saraswati Vidya Niketan, to adopt a saffron colour scheme, triggering opposition protests and disagreement within the ruling coalition. The institutions were formally launched by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Sunday, with officials promising smart classrooms, computer laboratories, libraries and sports facilities alongside the more urgent provision of ideologically dependable paint.
Education officials said the initiative would ensure that children struggling to identify verbs, fractions or laboratory equipment could at least recognise the government from several hundred metres away.
“The objective is holistic development,” said one official, holding a colour chart marked “national progress”, “civilisational confidence” and “slightly darker civilisational confidence”. “A student may forget algebra, but nobody forgets the exterior shade of a government building.”
Opposition parties accused the administration of saffronising education. The government rejected the charge, explaining that saffronisation required an ideological motive, whereas this was merely an innocent decision to rename hundreds of schools after a Hindu goddess and cover them in a colour strongly associated with the BJP.
Officials stressed that Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, was an appropriate symbol for schools. They did not explain whether knowledge would now be assessed through examinations or by asking pupils to identify the political significance of masonry.
AIMIM leaders attacked the decision, while JD spokesperson Neeraj Kumar declared that education had no colour, creating the awkward spectacle of a governing alliance debating whether a school should resemble a place of learning or a campaign office with chemistry equipment.
The BJP defended the colour as part of cultural identity. Party representatives argued that saffron stood for sacrifice, spirituality and courage, all qualities urgently required by teachers attempting to complete administrative paperwork before entering a classroom.
Government planners said the upgraded schools would serve pupils from Classes 9 to 12. This age group was selected because teenagers possess the emotional maturity needed to understand that a freshly painted building constitutes structural education reform.
Each school is expected to feature improved infrastructure. Smart classrooms will allow lessons to be displayed digitally, ensuring that modern technology can explain why the building looks like it has been selected to host a party convention.
Computer laboratories will help pupils acquire skills for a competitive economy. Libraries will provide books capable of being arranged by subject, author or degree of compatibility with the paintwork. Sports facilities will encourage teamwork, discipline and the ability to run quickly whenever another political delegation arrives for an inspection.
The government had earlier announced plans to establish Saraswati Vidya Niketan schools across all 534 blocks, presenting the programme as a way to expand access to quality education and standardise facilities. Sunday’s inauguration covered 551 upgraded institutions, demonstrating that Bihar can exceed its number of administrative blocks whenever sufficient ceremonial ribbon is available.
Parents expressed cautious optimism. Many welcomed better laboratories, teachers and classrooms, although some admitted they had not previously listed exterior pigmentation among the main obstacles facing their children.
“My daughter needs a physics teacher,” said a parent outside one school. “But perhaps the colour will explain gravity.”
Contractors were reported to be enthusiastic about the programme. Political arguments over education may continue indefinitely, but walls require repainting on a dependable schedule.
Education specialists warned that buildings alone cannot address teacher shortages, uneven staffing, weak foundational learning and high dropout risks. Officials responded by requesting specialists to select one of the approved shades before making negative remarks.
Students have also been encouraged to view the transformation positively. A proposed orientation module will reportedly teach them that schools were once grey, cream or blue during a less enlightened era when governments mistakenly believed educational institutions required only teachers, books and functioning toilets.
The colour dispute has exposed tensions inside the NDA, particularly between BJP leaders defending the decision and JD figures uncomfortable with overt political symbolism. Coalition managers are expected to resolve the matter through the traditional alliance method of publicly disagreeing before jointly inaugurating the next painted building.
A departmental committee may develop guidelines to prevent confusion. Under the draft rules, saffron walls will represent cultural pride, green playgrounds will remain horticultural, white uniforms will signify discipline, and any appearance of blue will require immediate clarification that it is merely weather-resistant primer.
Officials have assured families that classroom teaching will remain impartial. Mathematics textbooks will continue to state that two plus two equals four, unless a coalition coordination meeting produces a more electorally balanced number.
