Pawar wedding draws political rivals together

Revati Sule, daughter of NCP MP Supriya Sule and granddaughter of Sharad Pawar, married Nagpur businessman Sarang Lakhani in Mumbai, drawing a rare gathering of political rivals, corporate leaders and film personalities to one of the most watched social events of the year.

The ceremony, held on Saturday, brought together Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Bhagwant Mann, Mohan Bhagwat, Akhilesh Yadav, A. Revanth Reddy, D. K. Shivakumar and several Maharashtra leaders, underlining the Pawar family’s continuing reach across party lines even as state and national politics remain sharply polarised.

The wedding also attracted leading business figures, including Gautam Adani and Priti Adani, along with members of the Ambani family. Their presence added a corporate dimension to an event already being closely tracked for its political symbolism. Film personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Shah Rukh Khan, Jackie Shroff and Ravi Kishan also attended the celebrations.

Revati Sule married Sarang Lakhani, son of Nagpur-based businessman and politician Arun Lakhani. Sarang is associated with the Vishvaraj Group, a Nagpur-headquartered infrastructure company active in water management, wastewater treatment and urban utility projects. Revati, who has largely stayed away from active politics, is an alumna of the London School of Economics and has occasionally been seen during her mother’s public campaigns in Baramati.

The celebrations unfolded across multiple functions, with the sangeet drawing wide attention after videos of Shah Rukh Khan performing and interacting with the couple circulated widely. The wedding itself became a convergence point for leaders normally seen on opposing sides of the political spectrum, from Congress figures and chief ministers to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and members of the ruling establishment.

The guest list reflected the breadth of Sharad Pawar’s political network, built over more than five decades in public life. Pawar, a former Union minister and four-time Maharashtra chief minister, remains one of the state’s most influential political figures despite the split in the Nationalist Congress Party and the electoral setbacks suffered by the opposition alliance in Maharashtra.

Supriya Sule, MP from Baramati, has emerged as one of the principal faces of the NCP after the party split led by Ajit Pawar. The wedding came at a time when the Pawar family continues to occupy a central place in Maharashtra politics, with competing branches now aligned with rival political formations.

The presence of leaders from Congress, AAP, Samajwadi Party, NCP factions, Shiv Sena factions and the BJP-led establishment turned the family occasion into a broader political talking point. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge’s attendance reinforced the Congress-NCP relationship, while Bhagwant Mann’s presence highlighted AAP’s ties with opposition leaders beyond Punjab.

Mohan Bhagwat’s presence was also noted because of the Lakhani family’s Nagpur links and Arun Lakhani’s public profile. Nagpur, the headquarters of the RSS, has long carried political weight in Maharashtra, and the attendance of figures associated with competing ideological positions added to the interest around the event.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the pre-wedding function, while several other leaders from the state’s political class were seen at different events. The participation of leaders from rival camps suggested that family and social networks continue to cut across formal political divides, particularly in Maharashtra, where coalition politics and personal equations have historically shaped public life.

The business attendance also stood out because of the scale of corporate representation. The Adani and Ambani families remain central to the country’s corporate landscape, and their presence at a political family wedding drew attention amid ongoing scrutiny of links between politics, infrastructure, energy and capital.

The entertainment presence gave the wedding wider public visibility. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s attendance, along with Shah Rukh Khan’s appearance at the sangeet, amplified the event on social media. Clips from the pre-wedding festivities were shared widely, turning what would otherwise have remained a high-profile private ceremony into a national talking point.
