Lynching Over “Drone Thieves” Panic Sparks Outrage in Rae Bareli

A 38-year-old Dalit man named Hariom was brutally beaten to death by villagers in Rae Bareli district, Uttar Pradesh, after they suspected him of being part of a so-called “drone thieves” ring. Police say panic over rumours that drones were marking houses for theft fuelled the attack.

Authorities have arrested five individuals and suspended police personnel for their alleged negligence in preventing the mob violence.

The victim, a resident of Fatehpur district, was en route to his in-laws’ home via Unchahar when he was intercepted by locals. According to officials, in the dead of night, villagers tied him to a pole, beat him with sticks and belts, and left him near the railway tracks; his body was found the following morning bearing multiple injuries. The police registered a case under culpable homicide and are pursuing further arrests.

Investigators attribute the lynching to mounting fear in rural UP about drone-enabled burglary. Several districts have reported villagers on night patrols, confronting strangers, and circulating rumours that drones are being used to scout homes for theft. Despite the hysteria, no credible evidence has emerged to substantiate the existence of organised “drone thieves.”

Unchahar’s circle officer, Girja Shankar Tripathi, confirmed that the arrested—identified as Vaibhav Singh, Vipin Maurya, Vijay Kumar, Sahdev Pasi and Suresh Kumar Maurya—are from Dandepur Jamunapur village under the same police jurisdiction. Two leather belts, a cane and remnants of the victim’s clothes were recovered. An FIR names six accused, and investigators are scanning video footage and witness testimony to identify other participants.

Superintendent of Police Yashveer Singh announced the removal of the Unchahar Station House Officer, Sanjay Kumar, for failing to act despite prior alerts about drone- related rumours. Three additional police officers have been suspended. Officials claim that the administration was aware of rising tension in the area but lacked timely intervention to defuse it.

Political tensions flared following the lynching. The Congress party accused the state government and the chief minister of presiding over an environment of impunity. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed pointed to a viral video in which the victim, in disoriented state, is heard uttering “Rahul Gandhi,” to which attackers allegedly responded, “hum toh baba wale hain”—interpreted by critics as a reference to the chief minister.

Dalit rights groups and opposition leaders demanded swift legal action and compensation for the family. Chandrashekhar Azad, MP and head of Azad Samaj Party, condemned the incident as symptomatic of “rumour-driven violence” and called for ₹50 lakh compensation and a government job for the bereaved family.

Legal experts warn that this case underscores deeper fault lines: the weaponisation of panic, caste tensions, and failure of law enforcement to check vigilantism. They note that mob justice often finds fertile ground in areas where suspicion and misinformation take hold. Some analysts believe that the proliferation of social media, unverified messages and local intuitions about security can transform a whisper into a violent act.

Police claim the investigation is underway with forensic and digital evidence being gathered. Courts will now need to scrutinise police lapses, accountability of those who incited the mob and ensure protection of the victim’s family. The case is likely to become a flashpoint in debates over law, order and social justice in Uttar Pradesh.
