Shivakumar, also the state Congress president, faced backlash after he sang the RSS anthem "Namaste Sada Vatsale Matrubhume" during a legislative debate on August 22. He clarified that his intent was to mock BJP leader R Ashoka, not to endorse the RSS. Nonetheless, the incident drew criticism from within his party and the broader INDIA alliance, prompting his apology on August 26. He expressed regret if his actions had offended anyone, reaffirming his unwavering loyalty to the Gandhi family and the Congress party.
The JD swiftly responded, accusing Shivakumar of apologising out of fear of expulsion. A post on the party's official social media account labelled him a "coward" who "bowed down to save his chair." The JD contrasted his leniency with the swift dismissal of Dalit ministers within the Congress, alleging a double standard in the party's disciplinary actions.
BJP leaders also seized upon the controversy, with state general secretary V Sunil Kumar alleging that Shivakumar had compromised his patriotism to appease the Gandhi family. He criticised the Deputy Chief Minister for prioritising political loyalty over national interests.
