Security Forces Uncover Explosives Cache in Poonch Amid Intensified Counterterrorism Drive

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have recovered five improvised explosive devices from a concealed militant hideout in the Surankote area of Poonch district. The discovery, made during a joint operation by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Special Operations Group, forms part of a broader crackdown following the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.

The explosives, along with wireless communication equipment and clothing, were found in a forested area, indicating ongoing militant activities in the region. Security officials suggest that the materials were likely intended for attacks on civilian or security targets.

This operation is part of a larger security initiative across Jammu and Kashmir, where over 2,000 individuals have been detained under anti-terrorism laws. Authorities have also demolished homes of suspected militants, a move that has sparked controversy and legal challenges.

The Pahalgam attack, attributed to the militant group Kashmir Resistance, has led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. India has accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, leading to diplomatic fallout, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and closure of border crossings.

Tourism in the region has been severely affected, with over half of the government-authorized tourist resorts closed as a precautionary measure. The crackdown has also led to reports of human rights concerns, with allegations of collective punishment and unlawful detentions.
