Addressing the Consultative Committee on External Affairs, Jaishankar emphasized that the cessation of hostilities was a direct result of bilateral military communications, specifically initiated by Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations . He clarified that the United States had no role in mediating the ceasefire, countering claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Jaishankar detailed that Pakistan was notified of Operation Sindoor only 30 minutes after the initial strikes on May 7, which targeted nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These operations were in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities. The minister underscored that the strikes were precise and aimed solely at terrorist infrastructure, avoiding Pakistani military facilities.
In response to allegations from opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who suggested that Pakistan was forewarned about the operation, Jaishankar dismissed the claims as unfounded and detrimental to the credibility of India's armed forces. He reiterated that the information was shared post-strike, aligning with standard military protocols.
Jaishankar also conveyed to the panel that India had communicated to the United States its intent to respond with greater force if Pakistan launched significant counterattacks. This stance was part of India's broader diplomatic efforts to assert its position and deter further escalations.
The minister highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach among policymakers to address terrorism threats and ensure national security. He called for collective efforts to expose Pakistan's support for terrorism on international platforms, emphasizing the need for unity in India's foreign policy objectives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a rally in Bhuj, appealed to the people of Pakistan to reject terrorism and embrace peace. He cited Operation Sindoor as a demonstration of India's resolve and capability to respond to threats, noting the operation's success in crippling Pakistan's air defense network.
