Uttar Pradesh Restricts Meat Sales Near Religious Sites During Navratri

The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated the closure of illegal slaughterhouses and prohibited the sale of meat within a 500-metre radius of religious sites during the nine-day Chaitra Navratri festival, which commenced on March 30. Additionally, a complete ban on animal slaughter and meat sales will be enforced statewide on April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami.

Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, has directed all District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to implement these measures promptly. Citing orders from 2014 and 2017, the government emphasized that illegal animal slaughter and meat sales near religious places are strictly prohibited. To ensure compliance, district-level committees have been established under the leadership of District Magistrates, comprising officials from various departments including police, health, transport, and food safety.

Violators of these directives will face stringent action under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act of 1959 and the Food Safety Acts of 2006 and 2011. Shishir, Director of Information and Public Relations for the Uttar Pradesh government, stated, "There will be no meat/fish shop within a radius of 500 metres during Navratri. Even outside this radius, they will operate under the terms of the licence. No one will sell in the open. All shops will remain closed on the day of Ram Navami."

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the state during Navratri and Ram Navami. Furthermore, he has called for special cleanliness campaigns to be conducted by the Urban Development and Rural Development Departments during the festival period.

These measures reflect the government's commitment to upholding religious sentiments and maintaining public order during significant Hindu festivals. The enforcement of these bans is part of a broader initiative to regulate meat sales and ensure the sanctity of religious observances in the state.
