The controversy centers on Kamra's recent show at Mumbai's Habitat Comedy Club, where he performed a parody song that implicitly criticized Eknath Shinde. The act incited backlash from Shinde's supporters, leading to vandalism at the comedy club and the hotel housing it. Law enforcement authorities have since arrested several individuals involved in the incident.
BJP Member of the Legislative Council Pravin Darekar, who also serves as the Leader of the House, moved the breach of privilege notice. Darekar stated, "Kunal Kamra performed a song containing personal and insulting references to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde." He further alleged that Shiv Sena leader Sushma Andhare supported the performance and used objectionable language, actions he claims amount to contempt of the House.
The Privileges Committee, chaired by BJP MLC Prasad Lad, will now review the notice. If the committee finds merit in the complaint, the motion may be brought forward for discussion in the Legislative Council.
In a related development, Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Bornare submitted a breach of privilege notice in the state assembly against Sushma Andhare for allegedly mocking Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Minister of State for Finance Ashish Jaiswal has expressed support for Bornare's notice. BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar has urged for the prompt appointment of members to the Assembly's Privileges Committee to address the matter.
The incident has sparked a broader debate on freedom of expression in India, with supporters and critics of Kamra voicing their opinions on social media platforms. While some defend Kamra's right to satire as a fundamental aspect of democratic discourse, others argue that his remarks were disrespectful and warrant legislative scrutiny.
