Indian Scholar Leaves U.S. After Visa Revoked Over Alleged Hamas Support

An Indian doctoral student at Columbia University has departed the United States following the revocation of her visa due to alleged support for Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Ranjani Srinivasan, enrolled in the Urban Planning program, utilized the Customs and Border Protection Home App to self-deport on March 11, 2025.

The Department of State had revoked Srinivasan's F-1 student visa on March 5, citing her involvement in activities supporting Hamas. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that advocating for violence and terrorism invalidates the privilege of residing and studying in the United States. She stated, "It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live and study in the United States of America. When you advocate for violence and terrorism, that privilege should be revoked, and you should not be in this country."

Srinivasan's departure occurs amid heightened scrutiny of foreign students participating in pro-Palestinian activism on U.S. campuses. The DHS has intensified efforts to identify and address individuals perceived as supporting terrorist organizations. This initiative has led to increased monitoring and enforcement actions against international students involved in such activities.

In a related development, Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian student from the West Bank, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations officers in Newark for overstaying her F-1 student visa, which had been terminated on January 26, 2022, due to lack of attendance. Kordia had previously been arrested in April 2024 for her involvement in pro-Hamas protests at Columbia University.

The DHS's recent actions have raised concerns among international students and faculty across the United States. The crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University has led to a climate of apprehension, causing many to avoid engaging in discourse, debate, and political expression. Universities, including Columbia and the University of California, have warned international students about the potential immigration consequences of their speech and activities.

Columbia University, facing suspended federal funding and demands for policy changes, maintains it is committed to the law and free expression. The Trump administration continues to crackdown on perceived antisemitic and anti-Israel actions within the institution.
