Assam Congress Spokesperson Arrest Sparks Political Outcry

Assam Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh was arrested on Saturday for a social media post questioning the status of legal cases against senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders.

Singh's arrest was executed by a team from Lakhimpur district police, with assistance from Guwahati police, at his residence in Guwahati.

The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by the wife of BJP MLA Manab Deka.

On March 13, Singh shared a news report about three individuals convicted in a 2021 rape case in Dhemaji district and questioned whether BJP leaders Manab Deka, former Assam BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita, and ex-minister Rajen Gohain—whom he referred to as "rape accused"—would also face justice. He wrote, "Is the law equal for all?" tagging BJP Assam's official handle.

Singh's arrest led to significant drama, with visuals on social media showing a heavy police presence outside his Ulubari apartment.

Congress leaders condemned the arrest, labeling it as "political vendetta."

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the arrest, asserting that the case pertained to a caste-based insult directed at a Dalit woman.
