Ajit Pawar Calls for Unity Amid Communal Tensions in Maharashtra

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a stern warning against any attempts to intimidate the Muslim community, emphasising the importance of unity and communal harmony in the state. Speaking at an Iftar gathering in Mumbai, Pawar stressed that anyone trying to create discord between communities would face stringent consequences.

The Iftar, hosted by Pawar, served as a platform to address the recent communal tensions in Nagpur. The city witnessed violent clashes following rumours that religious texts were desecrated during a right-wing protest demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The unrest led to stone-pelting and arson, resulting in a curfew in several areas. Authorities have since arrested over 100 individuals in connection with the violence.

Pawar underscored the significance of India's diverse cultural fabric, citing historical figures who championed social progress by embracing all religions and castes. He remarked, "Many great leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr BR Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, and others have shown the path of social progress by taking along all religions and castes. We have to carry forward this legacy."

He further highlighted the recent observance of festivals such as Holi and the upcoming celebrations of Gudi Padwa and Eid as embodiments of India's unity in diversity. Pawar stated, "We have just celebrated Holi, and now Gudi Padwa and Eid are approaching. These festivals teach us to live together. Our real strength lies in unity."

The Deputy Chief Minister's comments come amid heightened political discourse in Maharashtra regarding the Nagpur violence. The unrest was sparked by demands from certain right-wing groups to remove Aurangzeb's grave, leading to clashes that disrupted communal harmony in the region.

In response to the violence, state authorities have taken measures to restore peace and order. The curfew imposed in affected areas has been lifted as normalcy returns. However, the incident has prompted discussions among political leaders about the need to uphold communal harmony and prevent the spread of misinformation that could incite violence.

Pawar's remarks also addressed recent statements by political figures that could potentially inflame communal sentiments. He cautioned against falling into the trap of divisive forces and reiterated the state's commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of all communities.
