AAP Declares Independent Bid for 2027 Goa and Gujarat Elections

The Aam Aadmi Party has confirmed its intention to contest the 2027 assembly elections in Goa and Gujarat independently, foregoing any alliance with the Congress party. Senior AAP leader Atishi announced this decision during her visit to Goa, where she inaugurated the party's new office in Margao.

Atishi emphasized that there have been no discussions regarding alliances, stating, "We are getting ready to contest the elections on our own. Till now, there are no talks of an alliance." She underscored AAP's commitment to self-reliance in the upcoming electoral battles.

Reflecting on the political landscape of Goa, Atishi noted that in the 2022 assembly elections, the Congress secured 11 seats. However, eight of these legislators subsequently defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party , leaving the Congress with only three MLAs. In contrast, AAP's two MLAs have remained steadfast with the party. Atishi remarked, "When the two AAP candidates won the 2022 elections, there were rumours that they would not survive in the party even for two months. But they are still with the party because they have not come to make money from politics."

Addressing the issue of potential alliances with like-minded parties, Atishi expressed skepticism, particularly concerning the Congress. She questioned the reliability of a party whose members have a history of defection, implying that such alliances may not align with AAP's principles. Atishi asserted that AAP's involvement in politics is driven by a desire to serve the people rather than personal gain. She stated, "We are not interested in politics where winning elections and making money is the sole aim. Our interest in politics is to deliver for the people."

In Gujarat, AAP has been actively restructuring its organizational framework in preparation for the 2027 elections. Following the 2022 assembly elections, where AAP secured five seats with a 12.92% vote share, the party appointed Isudan Gadhvi as the state president in January 2023. Gadhvi, a former journalist, was AAP's chief ministerial candidate in the 2022 elections. Despite not winning his seat, his leadership is viewed as pivotal for AAP's strategy in Gujarat.

Gadhvi has outlined a comprehensive plan to strengthen AAP's presence in Gujarat. This includes forming committees at booth, village, and city levels, appointing in-charges for all 26 Lok Sabha constituencies, and focusing on constituencies where the party has significant support. He has also emphasized the importance of performing well in the 2025 municipal corporation elections as a precursor to the 2027 assembly elections. Gadhvi stated, "We are here to work, be the voice of the people, and fight for them."

The decision to contest the elections independently reflects AAP's broader strategy to establish itself as a formidable political force beyond its traditional strongholds. By rejecting alliances, the party aims to present itself as a credible alternative to the existing political entities in both Goa and Gujarat.

In Goa, AAP is also gearing up for the upcoming Zilla Parishad and municipal elections, intending to contest these independently as well. Atishi's visit to Goa and the inauguration of the party's office in Margao signify AAP's commitment to expanding its footprint in the state.

The political dynamics in both states have been fluid, with instances of party-switching and shifting allegiances. AAP's decision to go solo is seen as an effort to capitalize on the perceived disenchantment among voters towards traditional parties. By positioning itself as a party focused on integrity and public service, AAP seeks to attract voters looking for a viable alternative.

As the 2027 elections approach, AAP's strategy will likely involve grassroots mobilization, highlighting its governance models in Delhi and Punjab, and addressing local issues pertinent to voters in Goa and Gujarat. The party's emphasis on clean politics and public welfare programs may resonate with electorates seeking change from the established political order.
