A Mumbai-based couple, Hansita Abhilipsa and Anil Kumar Mohanty, have been arrested for orchestrating a ₹120 crore scam by impersonating close relatives of Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, PK Mishra. The duo allegedly posed as Mishra's daughter and son-in-law to deceive individuals and businesses across multiple states.
The Income Tax Department initiated an investigation into the couple's financial activities, uncovering unaccounted wealth amounting to ₹120 crore. Their modus operandi involved leveraging the assumed identities to gain trust and solicit investments or favors from unsuspecting victims.
Authorities apprehended Abhilipsa and Mohanty in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, following a tip-off about their fraudulent activities. The arrest was executed by the Odisha Police, who have since been coordinating with their counterparts in Maharashtra to delve deeper into the couple's operations.
Investigations have revealed that the couple's deceitful activities spanned several years, during which they managed to amass significant wealth through their impersonation scheme. They targeted individuals and businesses, convincing them of their fabricated identities to extract money and other benefits.
The case has raised concerns about the ease with which individuals can impersonate high-ranking officials' relatives to perpetrate fraud. It underscores the necessity for stringent verification processes and public awareness to prevent such scams.
