Mamata Banerjee Emerges as India's 'Poorest' Chief Minister, ADR Report Reveals

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been identified as the least wealthy among India's state leaders, with declared assets totaling approximately ₹15 lakh, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

In stark contrast, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu stands as the wealthiest, possessing assets exceeding ₹931 crore.

The ADR report, which analyzed the self-declared affidavits of chief ministers across the country, highlights significant disparities in the personal wealth of these political figures. Banerjee's assets, valued at ₹15,38,029, comprise solely movable assets, with no immovable property listed. Her declared profession is "social work and politics," with an annual self-income of ₹15,47,845 for the year 2024.

Following Banerjee, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is the second 'poorest' leader, with total assets worth over ₹55 lakh. Abdullah's movable assets are valued at ₹55,24,430, and he has declared no immovable assets. His profession is listed as "politician," with a self-income of ₹14,52,010 for 2024.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ranks third among the least wealthy, with assets totaling ₹1.18 crore. His movable assets are valued at ₹31,80,766, and immovable assets at ₹86,95,000. Vijayan, who has declared himself a "politician," reported a self-income of ₹2,87,860 for 2024.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Andhra Pradesh's N. Chandrababu Naidu leads as the richest chief minister, with assets amounting to ₹931.83 crore. He is followed by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who possesses assets worth over ₹332 crore. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ranks third, with assets exceeding ₹51 crore.

The ADR report also notes that the average asset value among all chief ministers is approximately ₹52.59 crore, underscoring the vast economic disparities among India's state leaders.

In response to the report, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien lauded Banerjee's modest lifestyle and dedication to public service. He stated, "The life and times of Mamata Banerjee are not just exemplary by Indian or Asian benchmarks. Her record of selfless public service, nurtured with compassion from her simple home in a bylane in Kolkata, is what no public servant on the planet can match. Hers is no ordinary story—once in 100 years."

Banerjee, known for her austere lifestyle, has often been seen wearing simple cotton sarees and sandals, and she reportedly resides in her ancestral home in Kolkata. Her financial disclosures reflect a commitment to modest living, a trait she has maintained throughout her political career.
