Congress leader Alka Lamba has accused former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of misusing ₹33 crore of taxpayer money for luxurious renovations of his official residence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lamba, the Congress candidate contesting against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi in the Kalkaji constituency for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, highlighted expenditures on items such as carpets, curtains, opulent toilets, and a swimming pool.
Lamba criticized Kejriwal for contradicting his earlier promises of eschewing official perks, including bungalows, cars, and security. She emphasized that such spending was inappropriate, especially during a time when Delhi residents were facing economic hardships due to the pandemic. She questioned why these funds were not allocated to provide relief to women and families struggling with inflation.
The allegations are based on an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which reportedly scrutinized the expenditures. Lamba urged Kejriwal to provide a public explanation for the lavish spending and questioned the priorities of the Delhi government in light of these revelations.
The 'Sheesh Mahal' controversy, as it has been dubbed, centers on claims that Kejriwal authorized extravagant renovations at his official residence on Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when many public development projects were stalled. Kejriwal resigned as Chief Minister in September 2024 and vacated the bungalow in October 2024.
These developments come as political parties gear up for the Delhi Assembly elections, expected to take place in February 2025. The allegations have intensified the political discourse, with opponents questioning AAP's commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility.
