Western Nations Criticize Pakistan's Military Courts for Sentencing Civilians

The United States, United Kingdom, and European Union have expressed strong disapproval of Pakistan's military courts sentencing 25 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to ten years. These individuals were convicted for their involvement in the May 2023 protests following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The U.S. State Department voiced deep concern, emphasizing that military tribunals lack judicial independence and transparency, which undermines due process guarantees. Similarly, the UK's Foreign Office stated that trying civilians in military courts lacks transparency and undermines the right to a fair trial. The European Union echoed these sentiments, asserting that such actions are inconsistent with Pakistan's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The sentences were handed down by a Pakistani military court to individuals linked to attacks on military facilities during the unrest in May 2023. This period of turmoil was triggered by the arrest of Imran Khan, leading to nationwide protests by his supporters. The military described these sentences as an important milestone in ensuring justice and deterring political exploitation.

Imran Khan, who was removed from office in 2022, has faced numerous legal challenges and was arrested again in August 2023. His supporters argue that the crackdown on them is politically motivated, a claim the military and government deny. Despite his party securing a significant number of seats in the 2024 elections, rival parties formed a coalition government.

The international community's condemnation highlights concerns about human rights and the rule of law in Pakistan. The U.S., UK, and EU have called on Pakistani authorities to respect the right to a fair trial and due process, urging adherence to international human rights obligations.

Pakistan's Foreign Office responded by reiterating that the country's constitution and courts are capable of resolving internal matters. The government maintains that the trials were conducted lawfully and denies any unfair treatment of Khan or his supporters.
