TMC's Abhishek Banerjee Challenges Congress's EVM Allegations

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has openly challenged the Congress party's allegations of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering following its electoral defeats in Haryana and Maharashtra. Banerjee urged those questioning EVM integrity to present concrete evidence to the Election Commission, dismissing unsubstantiated claims as "random statements."

Banerjee emphasized the importance of adhering to established electoral procedures, including EVM randomization, mock polls, and thorough verification by booth workers, to ensure the credibility of the voting process. He stated, "If there are concerns about the EVMs, they should show a demonstration to the Election Commission."

This stance aligns with that of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who recently criticized parties for accepting EVM-based victories while blaming the machines for losses. Abdullah remarked, "When you get a hundred-plus members of Parliament using the same EVMs, and you celebrate that as sort of a victory for your party, you can't then a few months later turn around and say - we don't like these EVMs because now the election results aren't going the way we would like them to."

The Congress party, led by President Mallikarjun Kharge, has been vocal in its demand to revert to ballot paper voting, citing concerns over EVM reliability. Following the party's losses in Maharashtra and Haryana, Kharge stated, "We don't want EVMs, we want voting on ballot paper."

Despite these concerns, the Election Commission of India (ECI) maintains that EVMs are secure and tamper-proof. The Supreme Court has also dismissed petitions seeking a return to ballot paper voting, noting that allegations of tampering often arise only after electoral defeats.

The debate over EVMs has highlighted divisions within the opposition INDIA alliance, with parties like the TMC and National Conference distancing themselves from the Congress's stance. Banerjee's and Abdullah's recent comments suggest a lack of consensus on the issue, potentially impacting the alliance's cohesion ahead of future elections.
