Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has initiated a privilege notice against Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, alleging that his remarks during a parliamentary debate on December 13 were personal and disrespectful towards opposition members. The notice, submitted on December 16, calls for the matter to be referred to the privileges committee for further investigation.
The controversy erupted during a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, where Moitra raised concerns about the death of Judge B.H. Loya, a case previously adjudicated by the Supreme Court. In response, Minister Rijiju reportedly stated, "If such a thing is said then action should be taken against it. Or otherwise, this kind of a woman, any member will get up and talk like this... They are setting a very wrong precedent." Moitra contends that these comments were personal attacks and violated parliamentary decorum.
Invoking Rule 222 of the Lok Sabha's Rules of Procedure, Moitra emphasized that Rijiju's remarks were inappropriate and undermined the dignity of the House. The notice has garnered support from several opposition leaders, including Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, A. Raja, and Dayanidhi Maran (DMK), Dimple Yadav (SP), and Gaurav Gogoi and KC Venugopal (Congress). They collectively expressed concern over the minister's conduct and called for appropriate action.
