Jimmy Carter, 39th U.S. President and Nobel Laureate, Dies at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, passed away on December 29, 2024, at his residence in Plains, Georgia. He was 100 years old, having celebrated his centennial birthday on October 1, 2024. Carter's death was confirmed by his son, James E. Carter III, who announced it at 3:45 p.m. EST.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter Jr. emerged from humble beginnings as a peanut farmer to ascend to the nation's highest office. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the Navy until 1953. After his military service, Carter returned to Georgia to manage his family's agricultural business. His political career began in the Georgia State Senate, followed by a term as the state's governor from 1971 to 1975.

In 1976, Carter secured the Democratic nomination for president as a relatively unknown outsider, subsequently defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford. His presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant achievements in foreign policy, notably the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, and the Panama Canal Treaties. However, his administration also faced challenges, including economic difficulties characterized by stagflation and the Iran hostage crisis, where 52 American diplomats and citizens were held captive for 444 days.

After losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts. In 1982, he established The Carter Center, focusing on human rights, disease eradication, and election monitoring worldwide. His commitment to global health led to significant progress in reducing diseases such as Guinea worm disease. In recognition of his efforts in diplomacy and co-founding the Habitat for Humanity project, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter's post-presidential years were also marked by his dedication to writing, authoring numerous books on various subjects, including memoirs, politics, and poetry. His marriage to Rosalynn Carter spanned over 77 years until her passing in November 2023. Together, they were involved in numerous philanthropic activities, embodying a partnership committed to public service.

In February 2023, Carter entered hospice care at his home in Plains, choosing to spend his remaining time in comfort with his family. His passing marks the end of a life dedicated to service, both domestically and internationally. He is survived by his four children, multiple grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Tributes have poured in from around the world, reflecting on Carter's legacy. President Joe Biden stated, "America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian." Former President Barack Obama remarked, "Jimmy Carter was a man of pure heart, who dedicated his life to the betterment of humanity." International leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and King Charles III, also expressed their condolences, highlighting Carter's unwavering commitment to peace and human rights.

A state funeral is scheduled for January 9, 2025, which President Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning. Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, allowing the public to pay their respects. Following the state funeral, a private burial service will take place in Plains, Georgia, where Carter will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn.
