Congress urges Lok Sabha Speaker to remove Piyush Goyal's remarks

The Congress Party has called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to expunge remarks made by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, accusing him of making defamatory statements against its leadership during a parliamentary session. The demand was raised in the wake of heated exchanges in the Lok Sabha, where Goyal reportedly targeted Congress leaders while addressing opposition allegations against the government.

Congress MPs lodged a formal protest with the Speaker, citing parliamentary decorum and alleging that Goyal’s comments were not only baseless but also in violation of the rules of parliamentary conduct. The party has argued that the minister’s statements were a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of its leaders, calling for an immediate retraction and removal from the official records of the House proceedings.

During the debate, which focused on issues raised by the Opposition, Goyal’s remarks sparked strong objections from Congress benches, leading to interruptions and a brief halt in the session. Congress leaders maintained that the language used was uncalled for and sought Speaker Birla’s intervention to ensure accountability in parliamentary discourse. They stressed that allowing such comments to remain in the official records could set a damaging precedent.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated that the party would not tolerate what it described as an attack on its dignity and history. He argued that parliamentary debates should focus on substantive issues rather than personal attacks or baseless allegations. The demand to expunge the remarks has added to ongoing tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties, which have frequently clashed over procedural matters and contentious debates.

Speaker Om Birla, who has often emphasized the need for maintaining decorum in the House, is yet to announce his decision on the Congress party's demand. Analysts suggest that the matter may serve as a test case for the Speaker’s authority in navigating politically charged debates and ensuring that parliamentary discussions remain respectful and issue-focused.

Piyush Goyal, in response to the protests, defended his remarks as being rooted in facts and accused Congress of attempting to stifle dissenting voices. Goyal claimed that the Opposition was misusing procedural rules to divert attention from substantive governance issues. He added that the government would not be intimidated by what he described as politically motivated disruptions orchestrated by the Opposition.

The altercation reflects broader friction between the government and the Opposition, particularly over accountability measures and the functioning of parliamentary institutions. The Opposition has increasingly raised concerns about what it perceives as a shrinking space for dissent and debate within the legislature. Congress leaders argue that such incidents underscore a need for stronger safeguards to ensure civility in parliamentary discourse.

The Lok Sabha has witnessed repeated adjournments and disruptions in recent sessions, often driven by confrontations over key policy issues and allegations of impropriety. Observers note that the polarization in political discourse has created challenges for conducting meaningful debates. Calls for impartiality from the Speaker and adherence to parliamentary norms have grown louder, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for an environment conducive to constructive discussions.
