The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has unveiled a 13-month nationwide campaign, "Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Abhiyan," focusing on Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and the Indian Constitution. This initiative aims to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on ideological grounds, addressing concerns over perceived constitutional erosion, rising prices, and corruption.
Announced during the "Nav Satyagraha Baithak" in Belagavi, Karnataka, the campaign commemorates the centenary of Gandhi's presidency at the 1924 Belgaum Congress session. The CWC plans a "Samvidhan Bachao Rashtriya Padayatra" (Save the Constitution National March) from January 26, 2025, to January 26, 2026, featuring village-to-village relay marches, rallies, and seminars led by national and local leaders. The campaign will spotlight issues such as constitutional integrity, economic challenges, and corruption.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP and its ideological affiliate, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of longstanding opposition to the Constitution and key national symbols. He referenced Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent controversial remarks about Dr. Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, which have sparked nationwide protests. Kharge emphasized the Congress's commitment to defending the legacies of Nehru, Gandhi, and Ambedkar, stating, "We will fight till the end for the ideology of Nehru-Gandhi and the respect of Babasaheb."
The CWC also announced an All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Porbandar, Gujarat, in April 2025, symbolically choosing Mahatma Gandhi's birthplace to convey a political message in a state under BJP rule for 36 years. This session is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the party's organizational structure over the next year, enhancing its electoral readiness.
Kharge expressed concerns about the politicization of institutions like the judiciary, Election Commission, and media, alleging that the BJP's actions threaten democratic principles. He reiterated the Congress's demand for a socio-economic caste census and the removal of the 50% ceiling on reservations, underscoring the party's commitment to social justice.
