Yunus Pushes for Hasina's Return Amid International Tribunal Plans

A tribunal in Bangladesh has initiated steps to bring back Sheikh Hasina, the ousted former Prime Minister, as charges of human rights violations gain momentum under the interim leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 after a tumultuous end to her 15-year governance, is accused of bearing responsibility for the deaths of protesters during a mass uprising. The tribunal's actions reflect a significant shift in the nation's political dynamics since Yunus assumed leadership on August 8.

The call for accountability comes as Yunus reconstitutes the special tribunal that originally prosecuted crimes from Bangladesh's 1971 independence war. Prosecutors from the tribunal have formally approached Interpol, requesting a red notice to facilitate Hasina's arrest. Yunus’s administration has further stated intentions to engage with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to seek Hasina’s extradition from India, underscoring the seriousness of the charges leveled against her.
