Rahul Gandhi calls for statehood restoration as Omar Abdullah is sworn in as J&K Chief Minister

Rahul Gandhi has intensified his push for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir following Omar Abdullah's swearing-in as the region's Chief Minister. Gandhi, during a visit to the Union Territory, reaffirmed the Congress party’s and the broader INDIA alliance’s commitment to reversing the 2019 decision that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its statehood, downgrading it to a Union Territory.

The Congress leader’s stance comes at a pivotal time for the region, as Abdullah, the National Conference leader, returns to helm the local government. Addressing party workers and the public, Gandhi expressed that restoring democratic rights to the people of Jammu and Kashmir remains a top priority for his party. He underscored his deep personal connection to the region, referring to his familial ties and the Congress' longstanding political engagement in the state.

Omar Abdullah's swearing-in signals a renewed phase in Jammu and Kashmir's political trajectory, as the National Conference returns to power following the first assembly elections held since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. These elections have marked a significant moment of transition in the region, where Abdullah’s leadership is seen as a potential catalyst for local governance and rebuilding political autonomy.

Gandhi's efforts during his trip to the region were not limited to formal political engagements. He also sought to engage with a variety of groups, including students and civil society members, assuring them that Congress would continue its fight to ensure their rights and statehood are reinstated. Additionally, his interactions with National Conference leaders, including former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, reinforced a broader strategy aimed at consolidating opposition forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

While addressing the media, Gandhi criticized the central government’s decision to demote Jammu and Kashmir to Union Territory status, calling it an unprecedented move that needs to be reversed. He emphasized that the process of restoring full statehood must be carried out as swiftly as possible, as it directly impacts the democratic aspirations of the people.

Omar Abdullah, who has served multiple terms as Chief Minister, assumes office amidst heightened expectations from both the regional population and national political players. The ongoing political shifts in Jammu and Kashmir, set against the backdrop of broader national dynamics, highlight the challenges and opportunities ahead for the newly sworn-in government.
