Delhi’s LG Orders Prosecution in PWD Alleged Rs 200-Crore Hospital Scam

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has directed the Anti-Corruption Branch to prosecute five engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) following accusations of substantial corruption and procedural violations connected to renovations across eight government hospitals in the capital. This directive comes after an internal audit revealed severe irregularities totaling an alleged misappropriation of approximately Rs 200 crore, raising concerns about the oversight and management of essential public healthcare infrastructure.

This inquiry spotlights the alleged misconduct by engineers assigned to supervise and authorize renovation projects at hospitals including LNJP, GB Pant, and GTB. Audit findings detailed that these engineers bypassed multiple financial and procedural protocols, leading to excessive costs without corresponding improvements in hospital infrastructure. Reports indicate that standard procurement and construction norms were repeatedly ignored, with tenders allegedly manipulated to favor select contractors and facilitate inflated billing across multiple projects. The complaint specifies falsified project completion records, claiming that substandard or incomplete work was certified as finalized, resulting in payments significantly exceeding the actual work value.
