Manipur lifts broadband ban, restrictions in five districts

The Manipur government has partially lifted the internet ban imposed in its five valley districts, allowing broadband services to resume under stringent conditions. This decision came after a comprehensive review of the state-wide shutdown, which had been implemented to curb the spread of misinformation during heightened social tensions. However, mobile data services remain suspended due to persistent security concerns.

The prolonged internet suspension had significantly impacted various sectors, including education, healthcare, and businesses. Offices, schools, healthcare facilities, and even essential services such as LPG booking and refueling stations had struggled with the absence of connectivity, further aggravating the hardships faced by citizens. As a result, public pressure mounted for some form of relief, which led to the gradual restoration of broadband services.

Broadband services will now be available through static IP addresses, and subscribers will have to follow strict guidelines to prevent the misuse of internet services. Among these, users are prohibited from creating Wi-Fi hotspots or using VPNs, and MAC binding at the system level will be enforced. Additionally, subscribers will need to change their login credentials daily to ensure the security of their connections. Authorities will conduct physical monitoring to ensure compliance, and violators could face legal action.

While the government emphasized that these conditions are necessary to maintain security and prevent misinformation from spreading, the decision to lift the broadband ban was partly influenced by the significant economic and educational disruptions caused by the shutdown. Educational institutions, in particular, had suffered as students and teachers faced challenges in accessing online learning platforms during the blockade.
