Kejriwal Claims Victory as He Walks Free from Tihar Jail

Arvind Kejriwal emerged from Tihar Jail with a defiant statement, declaring that his morale had soared "100 times" despite the challenges he faced during his time in custody. Greeted by cheering supporters, the Delhi Chief Minister emphasized his resilience, noting that his time in jail had only strengthened his resolve. Kejriwal's release came after the Supreme Court granted him bail in connection with a high-profile excise policy case that has entangled him since March.

The case stems from allegations surrounding the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, which was controversially rolled back after facing opposition from Lieutenant Governor officials. Investigators from both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused Kejriwal of money laundering, alleging that funds obtained from liquor vendors were funneled into the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) electoral campaign in Goa.

Following his arrest by the ED in March and subsequent detainment in Tihar Jail, Kejriwal was hit with further charges in June. His confinement spanned several months, including a brief release for the Lok Sabha election campaign period in May. Upon receiving bail, the court imposed strict conditions, barring Kejriwal from accessing government files or returning to the Chief Minister’s office without approval from the Lieutenant Governor. These limitations underscore the complexity and sensitivity of the case as it continues to unfold.

Speaking outside the prison, Kejriwal reflected on the challenges posed by his political opponents and maintained that his detention was an attempt to weaken his political standing. His supporters, enduring harsh weather to greet him, hailed his release as a triumph of truth over conspiracy. The AAP, in turn, portrayed the bail as vindication, asserting that Kejriwal's integrity remained unscathed throughout the legal battle.

Despite these public displays of support, the excise policy controversy remains a significant political and legal hurdle for Kejriwal and his party. The ED's investigation alleges that the policy was designed to benefit specific liquor businesses, with the proceeds used for political gain. These claims have fueled ongoing criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose leaders predict further legal troubles for the Chief Minister, potentially leading to additional jail time.
