Congress MP Manish Tewari has called for an urgent discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh. On Tuesday, Tewari submitted an adjournment notice aiming to suspend the regular proceedings of the house to deliberate on the crisis and its implications for India.
The notice emphasized the need to prioritize this issue, stating, "This House should suspend Zero Hour and other business rules to discuss the political crisis in Bangladesh and its impact on India." The urgency of the matter stems from significant developments in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently resigned amid escalating protests and sought asylum in the UK. She is currently in Delhi.
The unrest in Bangladesh has led to severe consequences, including the death of over 100 people in the past two days. The situation has prompted the Indian government to respond swiftly. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar convened an all-party meeting to address the developments, briefing leaders on the steps being taken. The meeting saw attendance from key figures such as Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Jaishankar highlighted the strategic, economic, and security concerns for India resulting from the political instability in Bangladesh. The government is closely monitoring the situation, given its potential impact on bilateral relations and regional stability. The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has also been put on high alert along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent any spillover of violence.
Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and subsequent asylum request have added a complex layer to the situation. The Indian government’s handling of this crisis is crucial, as it affects not only diplomatic ties but also the internal security and economic interests of both nations. The Lok Sabha discussion proposed by Tewari aims to ensure that the government provides clear and actionable responses to the evolving crisis.
This political upheaval in Bangladesh marks a significant event, with implications that extend beyond its borders. The Indian government’s engagement and strategic decisions will play a pivotal role in shaping the future course of India-Bangladesh relations.
