General Sundararajan Padmanabhan, a distinguished military leader and former Chief of Army Staff, has passed away at the age of 83 in Chennai. Widely respected for his service, General Padmanabhan was a key figure in the Indian Army, particularly during his tenure as the Chief of Army Staff from September 30, 2000, to December 31, 2002.

Born on December 5, 1940, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, General Padmanabhan’s military career spanned over four decades, beginning with his commission into the Regiment of Artillery in 1959. His education at the Rashtriya Indian Military College and the National Defence Academy laid the foundation for a career marked by numerous leadership roles and significant contributions to the Indian Army.

General Padmanabhan held several pivotal positions, including the command of an Independent Artillery Brigade and a Mountain Brigade. His leadership during his time as the 15 Corps Commander in Kashmir is particularly notable. Under his command, the Army made substantial gains in counter-insurgency operations in the region. His service earned him numerous accolades, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for distinguished service.

In addition to his operational roles, General Padmanabhan was also involved in military education, serving as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy and the School of Artillery. His leadership extended to strategic positions such as Director General Military Intelligence and General Officer Commanding of both the Northern and Southern Commands, where he further solidified his reputation as a strategic thinker and effective leader.

After retiring in 2002, General Padmanabhan continued to be a respected voice in military circles, offering insights and analysis on defense matters. His passing marks the end of an era for many in the Indian military community, where he was affectionately known as "Paddy."
