The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has voiced strong objections to the West Bengal government's decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the tragic death of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which involved the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate student, has sparked widespread outrage, leading to demands for a thorough and impartial investigation.
The doctor's body was discovered in a seminar hall within the college premises, showing signs of physical assault. Initial reports suggest that the victim had suffered severe injuries, prompting accusations of sexual violence before her death. The discovery led to immediate protests by the medical community, with doctors and students demanding increased security and swift justice.
In response to the growing unrest, the state government formed an 11-member SIT to investigate the case. However, the BJP, led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, has criticized the move, alleging that the formation of the SIT is an attempt to shield those responsible and avoid exposing potential negligence by the hospital authorities. Adhikari has called for the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a transparent and unbiased probe.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing the controversy, stated that her government has no objections to a CBI investigation if that is what the protesting doctors demand. She emphasized that the case would be fast-tracked to ensure justice is served, assuring that the state has nothing to hide.
As the situation escalates, the focus remains on ensuring that the investigation is conducted without political interference, with the medical fraternity and the public closely monitoring the developments. The incident has not only raised questions about safety within educational institutions but also put the spotlight on the handling of sensitive cases by state authorities.
