Rohini Acharya Signals Rift Within RJD Family

Rohini Acharya, daughter of Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, has issued a pointed social-media post expressing her “deep displeasure”, sparking speculation of internal tensions in the RJD as Bihar prepares for its Assembly elections. The post follows an incident in which Sanjay Yadav, a close associate of Tejashwi Yadav, occupied a front-row seat meant for Tejashwi during a public event, prompting Rohini to declare that “my self-respect is paramount”.

Observers see her remarks as not merely about protocol, but reflecting deeper unease over perceptions of unfairness in party hierarchy and intra-family power dynamics. Rohini has also made her social media account private, unfollowed a number of politicians, and clarified in posts that she has “no desire for any position, nor any political ambition,” suggesting that her concerns are not about office but respect.

The seating controversy occurred during Tejashwi Yadav’s “Bihar Adhikar Yatra”, where Tejashwi was expected to occupy the lead seat on a specially prepared bus, a privilege traditionally reserved for the leader. Sanjay Yadav’s presence in that seat triggered social media criticism, with Rohini calling attention to the incident and insisting on dignity over status.

Tejashwi is engaged in intense campaigning ahead of the elections, emphasising development, youth issues and shifting away from just caste-based appeals. Party insiders say Rohini’s actions are being watched as tests of loyalty and unity within RJD at a time when stability in the leadership is considered crucial.

Lalu Prasad Yadav has intervened, reportedly calling Rohini directly to advise against taking “controversial steps” during campaign period. Tejashwi, too, is said to have expressed displeasure at the public airing of grievances, warning that such discord could weaken RJD’s electoral prospects.

Rohini’s stance appears to resonate beyond just the family circle. Tej Pratap Yadav, Rohini’s brother who has had his own disagreements with the RJD leadership in the past, has expressed support, while other party members are choosing silence. Political analysts suggest that these internal challenges may strain RJD’s coherence at a time opposition parties are seeking to exploit any signs of disunity.
