Two Soldiers Killed in Kulgam Encounter During Ongoing Operation

Two soldiers were killed and four others injured during a fierce encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday. The firefight, which broke out overnight, occurred on the ninth day of Operation Akhal, a large-scale anti-terror operation launched by security forces in the region. With the total number of injured now reaching 11, this clash marks one of the most protracted and deadly phases of the ongoing operation.

The exchange of fire took place in a dense forested area, where security forces had cordoned off the region following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. This marks a continuation of a string of violent incidents in the Kashmir Valley as insurgency-related activities remain a critical concern for the region.

Officials confirmed that the soldiers, part of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry regiment, were injured while engaging a group of heavily armed terrorists holed up in a remote hideout. Despite the ongoing gunfire and difficult terrain, forces were determined to neutralise the militants believed to be operating in the area. The military operations have intensified over the past few days, involving a mix of both ground troops and aerial support to target militant hideouts and movement routes.

Kulgam, located in the southern part of Jammu and Kashmir, has long been a hotspot for militant activity. The latest confrontation is part of the ongoing efforts to stem the insurgency that has plagued the region for over three decades. Although the Indian Army and paramilitary forces have made significant inroads against the terrorist factions in the past, recent months have seen a resurgence in activity, particularly in the southern parts of the Kashmir Valley.

As of now, security forces have intensified their operations, which also include raids and intelligence-driven strikes on terrorist hideouts across the region. The aim is to dismantle the operational infrastructure of militant groups that continue to operate in this volatile region. Given the increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by these militant factions, the operation has become one of the longest in the valley's recent history.

Military sources report that the operation has faced several hurdles, including difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions, which have complicated efforts to maintain control over the area. Despite these challenges, the operation has been described as a crucial part of the government's strategy to neutralise the threat posed by cross-border terrorism. In addition to direct confrontations, the operation has involved measures aimed at cutting off militant supply routes, which have been used to transport arms and ammunition into the region.

The attack also highlights the growing dangers faced by security forces deployed in the region. Since the beginning of Operation Akhal, both soldiers and civilians have paid a heavy price, as terrorist groups, often believed to be supported by external entities, continue to target security personnel and strategic installations.

The response from local civilians has been mixed, with some condemning the violence and others calling for the return of normalcy in the region. The violence has also sparked debate within the larger political sphere, with various political leaders calling for more robust measures to end the cycle of violence. While the central government remains committed to pursuing the operation, it faces growing pressure to address the underlying socio-political issues that fuel the insurgency.
