Mumbai Flooded Offices as Storm-Spurred Red Alert Holds City Hostage

A decree by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has shut all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai today, as the city remains under an unrelenting red alert due to dangerous weather conditions. Heavy precipitation continues to paralyse operations in India’s financial centre, prompting advisories for private enterprises to allow remote work.

Mumbai has endured approximately 500 mm of rainfall across 84 hours, marking one of the most intense monsoon bursts this season and igniting the first red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department for 18–19 August. The deluge has already claimed two lives, with another person reported missing, and has turned streets into surging rivers, mounting pressure on civic authorities and residents alike.
