Hospital Assault Raises Concerns Over Healthcare Worker Safety

A violent incident at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital has left 67-year-old nurse Leelamma Lal with severe injuries and 33-year-old patient Stephen Scantlebury facing charges of attempted second-degree murder with a hate crime enhancement. The attack has sparked discussions about the safety of healthcare professionals and the challenges they face in their line of duty.

On February 18, 2025, Scantlebury, who was under observation at the hospital, allegedly assaulted Lal, resulting in critical injuries. According to authorities, Lal suffered multiple facial fractures, a broken collarbone, and brain bleeding. Palm Beach County Deputy Sgt. Beth Newcomb testified that Scantlebury was heard saying, "Indians are bad," and admitted to assaulting an "Indian doctor."

Witnesses reported that the attack occurred swiftly, with Scantlebury allegedly jumping onto his bed and then onto Lal, assaulting her before help could arrive. Following the incident, Scantlebury fled the hospital but was apprehended by deputies while running down Southern Boulevard.

Lal's daughter, Cindy Joseph, a physician, described the extent of her mother's injuries, stating that her face was fully fractured, she was intubated and unconscious, with significant bruising and swelling. Lal remains hospitalized, and her condition is reportedly improving, though she was placed back on a ventilator.

In court proceedings, Scantlebury's wife, Megan, testified that her husband had been exhibiting paranoid behavior in the days leading up to the incident, believing that their house was bugged and that people were trying to harm him. Scantlebury's attorneys have argued that the attack was the result of a mental health crisis, describing him as a hardworking, loving husband affected by mental illness.

Despite these arguments, a judge ruled that Scantlebury will remain in jail without bond as he awaits trial. The hate crime enhancement on his charge could result in harsher penalties if he is convicted.

This incident has prompted nurse advocates to call for stronger safety measures for healthcare workers. A petition advocating for enhanced protections and harsher penalties for those who assault or intimidate healthcare workers has garnered over 10,000 signatures in just three days.

The attack has also led to discussions about the need for better security at hospitals and improved training for employees on handling patients experiencing mental health crises. Lal's family has expressed their desire to see policy changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.

HCA Florida Healthcare, which owns Palms West Hospital, stated that they are praying for Lal's recovery and are providing support to their hospital staff, who are understandably shaken by this incident. They are also assisting law enforcement in their investigation.

The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of workplace violence in healthcare settings. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration , incidents of serious workplace violence are four times more common in healthcare than in private industry on average. This incident underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to protect those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
